Landmarks and History - Split Rock Lighthouse

Two Harbors, MN

Perhaps the most easily recognized landmark on the North Shore of Lake Superior, Split Rock Lighthouse is a dramatic structure that was completed in 1910. It was built as a direct result of a November 28, 1905, storm that damaged 29 ships, which were part of the booming iron ore industry in northern Minnesota. Due to improvements in technology and navigation tools, Split Rock was decommissioned as an actual working lighthouse in 1969, but it is now part of one of Minnesota's most famous state parks.
