Quirky Stuff - Rocky Taconite

Silver Bay, MN

Venture off of Highway 61 into the town of Silver Bay, MN, and you will be greeted by Rocky Taconite! Back in the 1960’s, the steel industry figured out how to extract ore from taconite, and Silver Bay experienced its heyday of economic growth as a result. Rocky has been standing on his perch since 1964 to identify Silver Bay as the “Taconite Capital of the World,” and to commemorate the ingenuity of obtaining a valuable product from what was essentially a useless rock.
