Quirky Stuff - Saint Urho

Finland, MN

At the north end of town in Finland, MN, along Highway 1, you will find this giant wood-carved statue of Saint Urho. He is the legendary patron saint of the country of Finland who was responsible for driving the grasshoppers away, thereby saving the grape crops and the jobs of Finnish farmers (rumor has it he did so by using a phrase that loosely translates to, "Grasshopper, grasshopper, go the Hell!"). Saint Urho's Day is celebrated every March 16th, the day before St. Patrick's Day.
