The St. Croix River valley was traversed as early as 1680 by explorers such as Duluth, Father Hennepin, and LaSalle. Stillwater is recognized as the "Birthplace of Minnesota," as it was here that a petition was drafted requestion that Congress recognize Minnesota as a new territory. It goes without saying that Stillwater Township was also one of the first townships in Minnesota. It was established in 1858, the same year that Minnesota became a state. This town hall was constructed in 1886 and continues to serve the community for various elections and social gatherings.
