Restaurants/Landmarks and History - The Freight House

Stillwater, MN

When is a restaurant also an historic landmark? When it is The Freight House, of course. Built in 1883, this railroad freight depot served the bustling commercial hub of Stillwater, MN, as well as the the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad, until it was sold in 1970. In 1977 it was Stillwater’s first building to be added to the National Register of Historic Places. Now converted to a restaurant, The Freight House serves up hearty American fare to hungry locals and tourists in the beautiful downtown area.

Restaurants - The Lookout Bar & Grill

Maple Grove, MN

The Lookout Bar & Grill opened in 1958 on a hilltop in what is now the bustling city of Maple Grove. Orignally built on 40 acres next to a dirt road, this family-owned bar and restaurant is now completely surround by homes in the middle of a residential neighborhood. This landmark restaurant has been serving this area for decades, offering fantastic hamburgers, sandwiches, numerous entrees, and even the famous Broaster chicken. They also offer live music and entertainment, as well as catering and private dining room options.

Quirky Stuff - The North St. Paul Snowman

North St. Paul, MN

In 1972, the city of North St. Paul adopted the “snowman” as their official city logo. To accompany that, why not have a giant snowman statue as well? Built in 1974 by a local resident named Lloyd Koesling, the snowman was originally located on 7th Avenue and Margaret Street, but was moved to a more visible and prominent location along Highway 36 in 1990. According to the city of North St. Paul’s web site, the statue is 44 feet tall and weighs around 20 tons.
